The Many Faces of Love

- 2018 Pittsburgh Women's March - I had a wedding-free weekend last week and that gave me the chance to photograph the Pittsburgh Women's March on Sunday.I was born screaming, so marches, riots and political gatherings make me feel right at home. I've photographed some violent and chaotic marches in places like NYC, LA and San Francisco, but Sunday's march in Pittsburgh was a heart-opening mix of anger and love. Reading many of the banners, it was obvious how angry and divisive this country is, and it made me feel so very hopeful to see how many people felt so strongly. This is how change and upheaval happen, and I love documenting this historic time. I especially felt that way when I ...

The Many Faces of Love

- No One Is a Stranger - I was looking at some of my earlier wedding photography recently while on a search for a specific photo, and I couldn't help but notice how my work has changed over the years. Though the photos were technically fine, and I remembered that the clients were happy with them, they felt kind of impersonal and detached to me. These days, I get right out there on the dance floor, a respectful voyeur with a camera, smack in the middle of a tear, a good laugh, a quiet conversation. My camera is drawn to the heart of a moment like a magnet, and while I take no credit for this (I always say that Spirit is the photographer and I'm just It's camera), it's something that ...

The Many Faces of Love

- Women's March on Washington  2017 - It's been many years since I participated in and photographed a demonstration, but I couldn't resist making my way to Washington, D.C. last week to photograph the historic women's gathering the day after the inauguration. I have to say that I've never been in a crowd that large and it was something I'll never forget. There was about a 2-hour period during the speeches and before the actual march began where I literally couldn't move. It was a bit claustrophobic, and photographically, the best I could do was to raise my camera out of the crowd to grab whatever images I could before my hand would lower into the sea of people surrounding me. ...

An Unforgettable Night With Debbie Reynolds

The Many Faces of Love

- An Unforgettable Night With Debbie Reynolds - With the recent passing of Carrie Fisher, followed by her mother, Debbie Reynolds, just a day later, I felt compelled to share a wonderful memory I have of Debbie Reynolds from sometime around 1996.I was living in Los Angeles and working part time for the catering company, "Along Came Mary", who catered most of the Hollywood premiers. I was building my photography business and catering was the best way to make some quick money and make a few connections - mostly with people in the arts who were in the same boat as me.The movie “Mother” had just come out, starring Debbie Reynolds and Albert Brooks. ACM was catering the premier ...

The Many Faces of Love

- The Last Photo - My sister, Jan, and I have spent the past year since our mother’s passing going through and emptying out our family home.  I wrote about this experience in my blog post “Letting Go”,  a few weeks ago. But now that the house is completely empty,  down to the last dust bunny,  and the official signing is next week,  there is a sweet and unexpected addition to this story that I wanted to write about. My mother loved to take pictures.  I’ve also written about this, as well as my awareness and recognition that she is the reason I’m a photographer.  I grew up with her always having a camera on hand, if not in ...
